Teacher EXCEL Grants for MPS Teachers
Grants up to $750 each awarded to MPS teachers to fund creative classroom projects to enrich student learning. 51 grants awarded in 2005-06. A grant totaling $10,000 from the Community Foundation for the Fox Valley Region, Inc. - TRIFECTA Foundation Fund provided support for the Teacher EXCEL Grants.

MPS Reading is Fundamental (RIF) Program
Funds used to support a book distribution program at 50 MPS schools. About 25,000 students will select and keep three books. Funding was made possible through a grant from the Northwestern Mutual Foundation designated for this purpose. The grant award is matched 3:1 by the National RIF Program.

Incentive grants awarded to 20 schools and the MPS Department of Special Services Career Assessment and Training Program for their improved record of giving in the 2005-2006 MPS Employees' Combined Giving Campaign.

Grant to the MPS Health & Physical Education designated for the Best Friends/Best Men Program through a restricted grant from the Lynde & Harry Bradley Foundation.

Community Learning Center Summer Program
Grant awarded to support Milwaukee’s Summer Community Learning Center (CLC) Program which involves an extensive collaboration with ten (10) Milwaukee area Community Based Organizations (CBOs) including: the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Milwaukee; COA Youth and Family Centers; Journey House; Latino Community Center; Milwaukee County Extension; Northcott Neighborhood House; Our Next Generation, Inc.; Silver Spring Neighborhood Center; United Migrant Opportunities Services; and the YMCA of Metropolitan Milwaukee.

Together these agencies will operate thirty-two (32) sites in the 2006 Summer CLC program and will serve over 4,500 of Milwaukee’s neediest children (90% of whom qualify for free or reduced school lunch). MPS will provide kindergarten through 8th graders with summer school learning opportunities in the morning and the CBO’s will engage kids in the afternoons and all day on Fridays with recreation enrichment including art, music, dance, sports, fitness, field trips and nutritious meals.

Milwaukee Board of School Directors' Excellence in Education Awards
Each month, the Milwaukee Board of School Directors recognizes an outstanding school, student, staff member, or parent or community member for a display of excellence, achievement, and innovation that may serve as an example to our school district and the entire Milwaukee community. MPS teachers recognized receive $250 through contributions to the MPS Foundation.

• April 25, 2006 - Earlee Mason-Dove, Teacher, Elm Creative Arts School ($250)

National Board for Professional Teaching Standards Grant Awards
Eleven MPS teachers awarded a $900 grant for successfully completing the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards process.

MMABSE - Grant award to the Metropolitan Milwaukee Association of Black School Educators as a sponsor of the Teacher Recognition Program held in May 2006.

New Leaders for New Schools in Milwaukee Public Schools
Grant awarded to support the New Leaders for New Schools program for the Milwaukee Public Schools. New Leaders for New Schools promotes high academic achievement for every child by attracting, preparing, and supporting the next generation of outstanding leaders for urban public schools. In Milwaukee New Leaders will be working with MPS to recruit and develop approximately 40 outstanding Milwaukee school leaders to lead almost one/fifth of the city schools and impact approximately 20,000 students annually. Funding was made possible through a grant from the Northwestern Mutual Foundation designated for this purpose.

 

Area of Support:  Art and Music Programs

Elm Creative Arts School
Grants awarded to fund an Artist in Residence to implement various arts instructional and enrichment activities. Funding was made possible through restricted gifts from individuals and private-sector organizations, including a $15,000 grant from the Richard & Ethel Herzfeld Foundation.
